For the Media: MUNCHKIN BOILERS
Featuring a 95.1% AFUE, Munchkin Stainless Steel Boilers from Heat Transfer Qualify for Fed Tax Credit
EAST FREETOWN, MASS. (AUGUST 23, 2007) — All Munchkin Stainless Steel High Efficiency Boilers qualify for a $150 credit under the Federal Energy Policy Act of 2005. Manufactured by Heat Transfer Products, Munchkin residential boilers carry an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency rating of 95.1%, exceeding the 95% threshold to qualify for the credit. The units also meet Energy Star standards, as defined by the U.S. Department of Energy. Read more...

Made of 316L stainless steel, the highly compact Munchkin boiler couples condensing technology with a modulating burner to maximize energy efficiency:
- The unit’s corrosion-resistant, stainless steel heat exchanger features an extensive series of individual, baffled water circuits whose large surface areas are designed to extract all the latent energy from the combustion process, as well as from the by-products of that process.
“Condensing boilers extract so much heat that the resulting low exhaust temperatures permit venting with standard Schedule 40 PVC pipe,” explains Heat Transfer chief executive officer Dave Davis.
- The other key aspect of the Munchkin’s state-of-the-art ModCon technology is a pre-mix combustion system with a fully modulating, load-matching burner that aligns firing with current demand, rather than being fully on or off. If more heat is required, the unit’s fan accelerates; but if demand decreases, so does fan speed – another reason why the Munchkin burns less gas to produce the same amount of heat as a conventional gas-fired cast iron or steel boiler.
Meanwhile, the Munchkin’s low-NOx, sealed-combustion process and minimal water-volume content eliminate external heat loss, resulting in additional energy savings over a conventional boiler. In fact, the Munchkin’s 95.1% AFUE can result in payback periods of less than three years. Depending on the age of the equipment it is replacing, the Munchkin can cut fuel bills by as much as 50%.
Produced at Heat Transfer’s East Freetown headquarters, the Munchkin is available in five models, with inputs as small as 18,000 Btu per hour to a maximum of 199,000 Btu/h. All units carry the same tax credit-qualifying 95.1% AFUE, as well as a 12-year limited warranty. Weighing between 58 and 111 pounds, depending on the model, the compact units install virtually anywhere, with a zero clearance to combustibles. This small footprint, in addition to the payback, makes them ideal replacements in older residences.
